Nov. 5: 5 questions for ‘The Office’ star Oscar Nunez

PW: Oscar’s love life has kind of been put on the backburner — anything on the horizon for him?

Oscar: A little bit, but you’ll have to wait and see. We did just shoot some stuff with Oscar and a special guest star — whose father is kinda famous. It was pretty cool. There’s some amazing stuff coming up in the episodes that haven’t been aired yet.

Sherrie in Louisiana: Forget Jam. I’m digging this Erin and Andy flirtation on The Office! Will they actually hook up?

Yes! We just talked to Erin herself, Ellie Kemper, today and she told us it is so on. “There is definitely a romance developing between Erin and Andy,” she said. And even better: We won’t have to wait long. According to writer-star Mindy Kaling (Kelly): “We have the Christmas episode coming up in a few weeks and some great development between Andy and Erin happening there.” Yay for geek love!

Bren via Twitter: Did you see the Ryan-Kelly makeout scene in The Office Subtle Sexuality webisodes? Amazing! Will there be more of Kelly and Ryan?

Did we see it? Only about 85 times! For those of you in the dark, check out the music video from hilarious new Kelly-Ryan-Erin-Andy pop group Subtle Sexuality. Mindy tells us Office boss Greg Daniels has been so impressed with the popularity they’re hoping to do more. There are no plans to incorporate the group into the show, but they will be incorporating more Ryan and Kelly boot knockin’. Holler! “We just have this back and forth,” Mindy says of Kelly and Ry guy B.J. Novak, “but it’s kind of like an abusive relationship in a way. It’s so much fun.”

Oct. 1: Ausiello Files

Question: Will we be seeing Jan at all this season of The Office? —Kevin

Ausiello: There’s nothing on the books, as we say in the biz, but Melora Hardin insists it’s happening. “I know I am coming back this season,” she tells me. “Hopefully we’ll find out who the baby-daddy is.”
Question: Office scoop, please! —Colin

Ausiello: The mob subplot we’ve been hearing so much about will kick in while Jim and Pam are on their honeymoon. “Without Jim and Pam around, Michael and Andy and Dwight are visited by an Italian American insurance salesman and they think that it’s a mob visit,” explains exec producer Greg Daniels. “And there’s no one around to tell them that isn’t likely. So they kind of deal with the mob in their own minds.” Meanwhile, when the newlyweds return the following week, Daniels says there will be a shift in the power dynamic in the office. “Jim has gotten more ambitious because of the baby coming and is bumping up against Michael a little more. The company is dealing with the recession. Branches are closing and there are possible other shakeups happening there.”

Sept. 30: TheWrap.com

How long would you like “The Office” to continue in its current incarnation? Could you see the show continuing with a mostly new cast, a la “ER”?

Mindy Kaling very early on made the comparison to “ER,” and I think it would be possible to keep bringing new characters in. Ed Helms’s Andy Bernard was introduced in season three, for example, and Ellie Kemper came on last year. In our premiere, we introduced three summer interns just for the episode, but by the end of it I was curious to see more of them.

But it is hard to imagine the show without Steve and the current cast at its core. We are still several years away from having to think about it, and I have a good idea for a series finale episode, too.

Any chance of a “Parks and Recreation”/”Office” crossover? And how are things on the new show?

Things are great on the new show. Mike and I tinkered with things after our six-episode season one, and the reaction has been extremely positive. The show gets better and better every episode, which is tough for me as the pilot co-writer and director to admit. When we cast Rashida Jones on “Parks and Recreation,” though, I think we closed the door on a fictional crossover between the two worlds.

Sept. 28: Spoilers from the Entertainment Weekly article:

In the “Passion Package Room” in a Niagara Falls banquet hall — actually the Smoke House restaurant in Burbank, whose wood-paneled walls have been covered with black-and-white photos of the thundering falls — guests for the Halpert party (or “Halpret’” as the sign endearingly misspells) rehearsal dinner are picking at the last bits of their teriyaki chicken as they turn their attention to the evening’s main event. It’s time for the groom-to-be Jim (John Krasinski) to give his toast.

Even though Krasinski is just doing a quick run-through of this lines before cameras roll, the roomful of cast, crew and extras lets out a genuine “Awwwww” when the star utters these words for the first time: “People told me it was crazy to wait that long for a date with a girl I worked with,” he says of bride-to-be Pam (Jenna Fischer). “But I think even then, I knew I was waiting for my wife.”

Moments later, a genuine gasp sucks the air out of the room when Jim, in a burst of excessive enthusiasm, commits a major faux pas by blurting out something that leaves his family — especially his uptight grandma, “Meemaw” — completely chagrined. Unfortunately, the man who comes to his rescue is Michael Scott (Steve Carell) … who tries to smooth things over with a speech of his own … by the time Krasinski finally raises his glass “to waiting,” most everyone on set is tearing up — from crying, laughing, or both at once.

Michael and crony Dwight Schrute, inspired by Wedding Crashers, will be trolling for hook-ups. Office fussbudget Andy Bernard will pursue his budding crush on receptionist Erin by hosting a hotel-room bash. “He was supposed to be sitting next to her at the wedding, but Kevin switched seats with her,” [Greg] Daniels explains. “So Andy’s furious about that.”

Tensions will mount between Pam’s parents with her dad (Leverage’s Rick Overton) brings a young new girlfriend as his date, while her mom (Port Charles’ Linda Purl) comes solo.

… uncomfortable moments will lurk behind every flower arrangement and place card, as when Kevin and Oscar are mistaken for a couple, and Michael ambushes the rehearsal with his stand-up act.

The cast got so caught up in the moment … that they ad-libbed some of their own heartfelt lines during the wedding shoot.

Season 6 as a whole … will focus more on office comedy than romance. With Jim and Pam out of the office, Daniels says, “the balance of reason has been tipped,” prompting Andy, Dwight, and Michael to turn an innocent visit from an Italian-American insurance salesman into a potential Mob threat.

When Jim returns, he’ll shake up the power dynamic as impending fatherhood sparks his long-dormant ambition. He and Pam will also face questions of maternity leave and day care, not to mention a birth that should conveniently fall around February sweeps. For the record, the producers swear they don’t know how the birth will go, let alone how much time off Pam will take, or if the audience will see much of the baby.

As for Michael’s angst-ridden love life, producers say he’ll find some eventually — but not likely this season. (Amy Ryan’s goofball HR executive, Holly Flax, whom Carell calls “the real love of Michael’s life,” isn’t slated to return anytime soon.) Says Daniels: “Michael says something in [the wedding] episode like “This is going to be the most important wedding for this branch besides my wedding.”

… fans can count on seeing a first birthday (if not a second) for baby Halpert, as most of the cast is signed through season 8; and Michael still has time to find love, because Carell is signed through season 7. Krasinski and Fischer say they’ll stick around as long as the show does, while Carell isn’t quite as clear on his plans.

Ausiello: Dwangela will eventually be reunited, according to both Angela Kinsey and Rainn Wilson. “They’re soul mates,” Kinsey told me on the Emmy red carpet. “They’re going to find each other.” Added Wilson: “I think they are destined to be together. I think it’s just a matter of when the writers need to dig that storyline back up and lay it back in.”

Question: Anything on The Office? 3… 2… 1… go! —Jason

Ausiello: Um… er… There’s footage of Jim and Pam’s wedding floating around, and Jenna Fischer’s seen it! “I have seen a rough cut of the wedding episode and [fans] will be satisfied,” she told me on the Emmy red carpet. …future storylines include Michael freaking out over a meeting between Dunder Mifflin CFO David Wallace (Andy Buckley) and Jim (John Krasinski), and the employees becoming convinced that an Italian-American insurance man visiting the office is a mobster.

And then, of course, there’s the upcoming marriage of Jim and Pam (Jenna Fischer), who were last seen learning they were having a baby. The wedding will take place over the season’s fourth and fifth episodes, Mr. Lieberstein said, and will be set in part at Niagara Falls, where Mr. Krasinski and Ms. Fischer were recently seen filming scenes.

“That’s coming out really well. It’s pretty straightforward; it’s a wedding,” Mr. Lieberstein said. “It’s just our characters going through it, and things getting messed up.”

As far as plot developments for his own character go, Mr. Lieberstein said Toby will figure prominently in the second episode, when he and Dwight (Rainn Wilson) team up to find out if Darryl (Craig Robinson) is faking a worker’s compensation claim.

I haven’t been able to confirm any of this NBC, but it makes sense in light of the following spoiler Office producer/co-star Mindy Kaling tweeted yesterday: “Sitting in airport going to a mysterious location to shoot something exciting.” That tease came six days after photos surfaced of Fischer and Krasinski shooting wedding scenes at a church in Van Nuys, Calif.

Aug 23: Boston Herald

When the Emmy-winning NBC comedy returns for a sixth season Sept. 17, the series will pick up a few months after the May season finale in which Pam (Jenna Fischer) and Jim (John Krasinski) discovered Pam is pregnant.

“We pick up three weeks before the wedding,” executive producer and writer Paul Lieberstein said in an interview from the show’s set in Los Angeles earlier this month.

“‘She’s not showing yet. She’s hoping to get through the wedding without showing.”

The wedding will take place in the fourth episode of the season; viewers will meet Jim’s and Pam’s families. Pam will give birth in a February episode.

“I thought it was fun to do something out of order with them,” said Lieberstein, who also plays sad-sack HR representative Toby on the series.

“They’re obviously a good couple, but just to throw a little real, but very simple obstacles, in front of them. They’re the kind of people who deal with small things in an amusing way. Jim has a good sense of humor and Pam can get worked up by certain things. So we thought it was an interesting way to go.”

Lieberstein doesn’t expect the baby’s arrival to dominate the show.

When Pam and Jim depart for their honeymoon, Lieberstein said, “The coalition of reason is a little weak in the office.”

In addition to the major life changes heading Jim and Pam’s way, Lieberstein said that Michael also will have a big story line.

Lieberstein also ominously hinted that in the second half of the season there will be “trouble with Dunder Mifflin.”

“Michael finally kind of found his mojo in a way last season,” he said. “We’ve always said Michael is great at sales for reasons we can’t explain and terrible at managing. And that is something we see becoming a big deal in an arc you see starting the second episode.”

Daniels said he “assumed” the wedding would take place on the U. S. side of the Falls, but wouldn’t be sure until Fieg finishes his scouting.

“I know the Canadian side is very dramatic,” said Daniels after a news conference with the nation’s television critics on the set of the program. “We’re scouting a lot of different locations.”

Sweet Pam and prankster Jim were engaged last season. They planned to elope in the season’s next to last episode but called it off after deciding to have a real wedding. In the season finale, Pam and Jim learned that she was pregnant after she had medical tests at a hospital where she was taken after injuring an ankle playing volleyball at the company picnic. Why are they getting married at the Falls?

“It felt to me that it was in kind of the same spirit of Scranton and the Buffalo branch [of Dunder Mifflin] and the Rust Belt,” said Daniels. “And it has an impressive component to it. It is a little bit undervalued and it worked with our kind of theme — that they decided to go with a kind of kitschy wedding.”

He said “part” of the wedding will be filmed in the Falls and Krasinski and Fischer will be there.

“Michael’s meeting with an Italian-American gentleman the week after Pam and Jim get married,” he finally revealed. “They’re away on their honeymoon, and the coalition of reason is weak around the office. And it comes to everyone’s belief that Michael has just met with the mafia, for insurance money. So it’s Michael is dealing with the mafia.”

Lieberstein also mentioned that there will be a Dunder Mifflin shareholders’ meeting. Daniels then “whispered” to him, “What about that North Korea thing?” knowing he was whispering right into the microphone.

But Jim and Pam aren’t the only Dunder-Mifflinites with love on their minds. Daniels also mentioned that Andy’s affection for Erin, Pam replacement at the reception desk, is still in full effect… though Erin (Ellie Kemper) is largely unaware of it.

As for Michael, Lieberstein told us that DM Scranton’s fearless leader has a tough time ahead of him, as there’s really no one in his life romantically right now. He will, however, make the acquaintance of — and possibly move in with — an Italian-American gentleman, who pulls Michael into the mafia.

At least that’s what his employees decide when they see Michael and the Tony Soprano-type together.

As Lieberstein explained, Jim and Pam go off on their honeymoon and with the “coalition of reason” absent from the office, conclusions are made.

Aug 11: ifmagazine.com

The upcoming season of the show will focus heavily on the wedding of Pam (Jenna Fischer) and Jim (John Krasinski) and one of the episodes will actually show the wedding, it will also be an hour long special. The opening episodes of the season will focus on how the wedding and the baby of Jim and Pam will affect those in THE OFFICE, according to Paul Lieberstein, who plays Toby on THE OFFICE and is a writer for the show.

We will also see that Jim will be challenging himself even harder this season with the wedding, the baby and his work, says BJ Novak, who plays Ryan and is also a writer on the show.

“We were trying to deal with Pam and Jim’s desire to move on with their lives and job, so we had to destroy the American economy so that they can appreciate having jobs,” says Greg Daniels, executive producer of THE OFFICE.

As far as Andy goes, he develops a big crush on Erin (Ellie Kemper), who will also be a full member of the cast this year.

As far as episodes go, Michael will meet an Italian-American person that THE OFFICE mistakes for Michael meeting a member of the mafia. Jim and Pam’s baby will develop slowly throughout the season (pun intended) and will make its “debut” in February of 2010 with an hour-long special.

There will be about 26 episodes this season.

Aug 6: TV Guide

Pam and Jim from The Office are tying the knot this season, midway through Pam’s pregnancy. Jenna Fischer, who plays Pam, broke the news exclusively to TVGuideMagazine.com, saying she’s being fitted for wedding gowns with room for Pammy’s bump.

“The plan is for Pam and Jim to get married in the fourth episode,” she said from The Office set, where production on Season Six began last week. Writers are still working out the details, but Fischer said, “It’s going to be a destination wedding, probably in Niagara Falls. By making it a destination wedding, the hope is that nobody from the office will come.”

Though Pam will be four and a half months pregnant when the show returns on September 17, Michael will remain clueless. “We’re keeping it a secret from Michael for a couple reasons,” said Fischer, who recently announced her own engagement to screenwriter Lee Kirk. “First, Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam aren’t married yet, and also, just, you know, it’s Michael Scott we’re dealing with.”

The wedding doesn’t take place within Dunder-Mifflin’s walls, though Kaling generally likes episodes that stay in the office. “It’s hard though for a wedding,” she said, “because we could try to manufacture a situation where they could [marry there], but it would be weird.” Also, per Novak, it’ll happen sometime in the Fall.

* Novak said this season’s episodes will largely take place in the office rather than taking the cast on adventures outside Dunder-Mifflin’s walls.

* Ryan is still “finding his way in the world, as always,” Novak said. His hair is back to brown, but “there may be some mascara involved” in his new look.

* Kaling is directing this Fall’s batch of webisodes, which will star Novak and Ed Helms “singing and dancing.”

The show will pick up in real time. Pam is just out of her first trimester but isn’t really showing yet. The cool part about playing Pregnant Pam is that my real-life sister Emily is pregnant. She and Pam got pregnant at almost the same time! I find out how she’s feeling, what she’s going through. It’s the best resource ever!

Kaling’s immediate future also involves a move into directing. The Dartmouth alum is helming (and appearing in) the next batch of “Office” webisodes, which revolve around a female rock band called Subtle Sexuality.

Maureen in Sunnyvale, Calif.: I miss The Office! Are we ever going to see Jan again?

Yes, ma’am. The lovely Jan Levinson (Melora Hardin) will be back on The Office next season, but only part time. At the premiere of her indie flick, You, Melora spilled on what to expect from Jan’s triumphant return to The Office: “I’ll be back as a special guest star next year for a couple of episodes. They can’t lose Jan, we all love Jan. She will probably be sprinkled in throughout the season.” Teased Melora, “It will be hilarious to see her as a mother, and we need to find out who the father of Astrid is.” Kevin! Please let the baby daddy be Kevin.

Is Holly Flax coming back to THE OFFICE?

Your guess is as good as hers. “They keep that (the plans for Holly) under wraps, if they are indeed thinking of it. There’s no plan there.” When I asked her if she was under contract for any episodes next season, she said she wasn’t.

Revolving Office door: Jan’s back!

The Office’s Melora Hardin, who’s been largely MIA this season as Michael’s ex Jan, will reappear next fall. ”We’re [talking] about what we are going to do with her,” says the actress, who was just cast in FX’s boxing-themed pilot Lights Out. ”[But] they assure me they need me next season.”
